Marybeth Wishart

Lowcountry Children's Book Author

Marybeth Wishart, Lowcountry Children's Book Author, Creator of Parker the Purple Penguin

Marybeth Wishart is a retired teacher turned author, who now uses her three decades of experience to teach kids about feelings, friendship, and more through charming picture books featuring a purple penguin named Parker.

Hello, my name is Marybeth Wishart and I am a retired elementary and high school Special Education Teacher of over 34 years. Originally a resident of Connecticut for over 60 years, I relocated to South Carolina with my husband in 2018.

I found myself surrounded by creative folks, including many authors, and finally felt brave enough to pursue publishing my first book. The Lowcountry is an area that sparks creativity and people are incredibly encouraging. They give you the confidence and support to step out to pursue your dreams.

The story for my first book, Parker the Purple Penguin, was based on a story I told my own two children over 35 years ago. It was inspired by the inclusion of my special education students into general education classes at the time, and the desire for my own children to embrace diversity, inclusivity, empathy, and kindness.

In fact, it was this encouragement from many folks that helped me pursue the publication of my second children's book, Parker Discovers the Blues, which was published in 2024. This book, with a social emotional theme, is now being used by parents, teachers and counselors. It helps children identify and regulate their emotions, along with focusing on what it means to be a good friend to others.

I frequently visit preschool and elementary classrooms and libraries sharing my stories and actively engaging in lively discussions with the students. I believe my stories resonate with all children (and adults) and the sharing of my writing journey encourages them to write their own stories and never give up on their dreams! I love answering questions about the writing and publishing process and hearing their stories too!

My website, wishartbooks.com, provides has an Activity section centered on the themes of the books.

I have more manuscripts of children's stories written and will see what the future holds! I love children's stories that engage emotions, encourage learning and help us all make the world a better place!

What advice would you give to emerging writers?

My advice, as an "older" author is to research, find people at the same place you are (there are lots of online author groups with lots of classes and advice), speak with other authors, keep at it and never, ever give up!

How do you stay connected to the local arts or writing scene?

I have some school visits in the planning process for the spring, along with the 2nd annual Summerville Book Festival on February 28th which is a wonderful event held in downtown Summerville! I will also be at a University of South Carolina author event, Books & Blooms, at the Seven Oaks Plant Shop in Columbia on March 14th.

I have been connecting with local authors in the Summerville, North Charleston and Charleston areas and am excited to be part of the newly formed "Lowcountry Storymakers Network". I am also a member of SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) and KidLit 411.

What’s your favorite independent bookstore or literary hangout in the Lowcountry?

One of my favorite independent bookstores in Summerville is Main Street Reads. They are cheerleaders for authors and actively encourage and engage local authors for events, readings and events. It's a happy hangout place! I also appreciate the various businesses that carry my books and invite me in for readings (including Simple Treasures, Summit Coffee in Nexton, Twisted Sugar, and of course, Main Street Reads).

What’s a book you always recommend to others?

I am a reader and belong to two book clubs. It's hard to pick a favorite book but I did give away, Theo of Golden, this past holiday season to some family members. The main character reminds me to be more curious and intentional in my interactions with others.

If your book were turned into a film, who would play your main character?

I can't imagine who would play Parker the Purple Penguin in a film but I'd sure love to see Parker as a children's TV show or movie character! I think we can learn alot from him too!
